Operations or Departmental Manager CMI Diploma in Operational Management

Until the end of 2024, enrolments onto our Operations/Departmental Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship, will include the CMI Diploma in Operational Management at no additional cost. This course is designed to equip individuals for advanced roles in operations or departmental management.

This comprehensive apprenticeship programme and CMI Diploma combination covers essential topics such as leadership, strategic planning, financial management, project management, and change management. The diploma has been embedded into the apprenticeship delivery schedule to incorporate an effective delivery method.

Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, apprentices will gain a profound understanding of operations and departmental management. They will be skilled in leading and managing complex projects, teams, and departments effectively. Additionally, apprentices will acquire the capabilities necessary to formulate and implement strategic plans, manage budgets, assess performance, and spearhead organisational change.

All apprenticeship standards cover three overall sections, these being Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours. Each of these areas is associated with the specific standard and covers topics that are relevant to that industry and profession. The core topics covered for the Operations or Departmental Manager Level 5 apprenticeship are below.

CMI Diploma in Operational Management

Within the CMI Diploma in Operational Management there are 6 modules, these include:

Unit 549: Developing, Managing and Leading Teams

Unit 550: Stakeholder Relationships

Unit 551: Managing a Project

Unit 552: Managing Change

Unit 553: Operational Planning

Unit 554: Personal and Professional Development

The training is a blended learning delivery model, which occurs on the job during working hours. A structured learning and assessment plan is put in place to test core components of the course along the way.

This consists of:

1-to-1 monthly meeting: Approx. two hours with a GLP Trainer (face-to-face or telephone)
Online learning courses and/or group sessions
Building an electronic portfolio of work-related evidence
Maths and English Level 2 (if not previously achieved)
6 hours a week spent working towards your apprenticeship.
End Point Assessment by an external examiner to complete the qualification, consisting of a resourcing project assignment and a professional discussion.

To achieve the qualification, within which you can either get a result of Pass, Distinction or Fail, you will be assessed both throughout the period of your apprenticeships, as well as in the final stages with an End Point Assessment (EPA).

End Point Assessment:

The EPA period will only start once the employer is satisfied that the apprentice is consistently working at or above the level set out in the occupational standard.

In addition, the apprentice must have completed the following gateway requirements prior to beginning EPA:

Functional Skills Qualification (if required to do so).

The End Point Assessment process which typically takes 3 months and is carried out by Highfield, consists of two components:

Professional Discussion underpinned by Portfolio of Evidence

Throughout your apprenticeship, you will gather evidence and information that forms your portfolio, and this will be used for your professional discussion. This discussion/interview with your assessor allows you to showcase everything you have learned over the course of the programme.

Project Proposal, Presentation and Questioning

The assessment method involves producing a project proposal, presentation, and questioning. The Project proposal must have real business benefit and demonstrate the KSBs that have been learnt.

The combined score of these two methods will provide the final grade for the apprenticeship.

CMI Diploma

To achieve the CMI Accredited Diploma you must submit a portfolio of evidence developed along your learning journey to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

Upon completion, apprentices can register as full members with the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management, and those with 3 years of management experience can apply for Chartered Manager status through the CMI.

Other job roles suitable with this apprenticeship include project manager, supply chain manager, business development manager, retail manager, logistics manager, customer service manager, and a general manager.

The specific career path may vary based on the industry, the size of the organisation, and individual preferences and strengths.
