Property Maintenance Operative

The primary role of a Property Maintenance is to optimise property condition and quality, to make certain that building is kept in a safe working condition.

Property Maintenance Operatives require to maintain a high level of quality and show effective recording and reporting skills, to ensure that there is maximum satisfaction to customers, clients, guests and their teams. They will demonstrate the importance of buildings including electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems and equipment.

As well as, carrying out repairs to walls, doorframes, skirting boards or addressing plaster damage to internal walls. They will provide a first and immediate response to fault finding, whilst maximising quality and ensuring cost-effectiveness. They will ensure the prevention of major damage that could result in extensive costs and minimise reactive intervention for a safe working condition.

As an entry-level apprenticeship, the Property Maintenance Operative Level 2 apprenticeship standard is suitable for many. Providing those taking their first step into maintenance with all the knowledge, skills and behaviours they require to get started.

Entry Requirements

Down to the discretion of individual employers but typically includes:

Level 1 English and Mathematics, or equivalent (can be completed during the apprenticeship)
16 or over

Not in full-time education

As this course is varied in terms of its content, with a lot of hands-on skills as well as knowledge to be taught, we deliver with a hybrid approach. We have bays on-site at our Worcester HQ where all practical elements of the standard can be taught, demonstrated and practiced, as well as classroom space for knowledge segments. Further knowledge segments are also taught remotely with online masterclasses where you will hear from industry experts.

Throughout the course of your apprenticeship, you will need to complete a portfolio of evidence and research assignment. These are to ensure you’re progressing through your apprenticeship well and keeping up to speed with all of the knowledge, skills and behaviours you’re learning. This assignment and the portfolio of evidence account for 30% of your final grade and are assessed by your training provider (us).

To attain the qualification, you will undergo an assessment throughout your apprenticeship, culminating into a final evaluation known as the End Point Assessment (EPA), which can get you a result of a Pass, Distinction, or Fail.

Moreover, the apprentice must have completed the following requirement prior to beginning their EPA:

End Point Assessment Gateway:

The Property Maintenance Operative EPA is administered by City & Guilds, our designated End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO).

The EPA process commences once the employer confirms that the apprentice consistently meets or exceeds the standards outlined in the occupational standard.

The employer must confirm that they think the apprentice:

is working at or above the occupational standard as a property maintenance operative
has the evidence required to pass the gateway and is ready to take the EPA

End Point Assessment:

EPA's typically takes about 3 months and apprentices are required to complete:

Practical Assessment with Questions: An assessor observes the apprentice completing a task (or series of tasks) set by the EPAO. The EPAO decides where it takes place and the assessment environment must closely relate to the apprentice’s natural working environment.
Interview underpinned by a portfolio of Evidence (related to the KSB's): An assessor asks the apprentice questions. The apprentice can refer to and illustrate their answers with evidence from their portfolio of evidence.

Knowledge Assessment: A multiple choice test will be conduced in a controlled and invigilated environment.

The combined score of these methods will provide an overall final grade for the apprenticeship.

A Property Maintenance Operative will have the option to work in a variety of sectors such as: Housing, Healthcare, Social Care, Hospitality, Education, Commercial Properties, Leisure, Public & Private Sector Buildings.

Many opportunities arise in roles that use maintenance as a primary task like Property engineer, Facilities Assistant, Maintenance Engineer, Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Technician, Caretaker, Janitor, Multi-skilled Technician, and Premises Manager.

If you would like to continue advancing your education, we offer a route into one of our other apprenticeships upon completion, common progression routes are often to our Building Services Engineering or Facilities Services/Management apprenticeships.

The apprentice will be recognised by the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) providing Associate Membership for the apprentice whilst studying.  BIFM have confirmed resources and learning materials will be available for the apprentice to support them throughout their learning journey.
