Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician

The Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician apprenticeship equips individuals with conventional skills and knowledge in maintenance and operations engineering. Apprentices gain practical abilities and theoretical knowledge in various technical tasks, ensuring machinery efficiency. They develop a solid foundation in engineering principles, focusing on maintenance, diagnostics, and problem-solving.

The program covers electrical and electronic systems, mechanical systems, fluid power systems, and control systems. Apprentices gain hands-on experience in diagnosing faults, conducting repairs, and implementing preventive maintenance. Communication and teamwork skills are emphasized for collaboration with colleagues to optimise efficiency.

Continuous professional development is encouraged to stay updated with technology and industry practices. Completing the apprenticeship enables individuals to work effectively in maintenance and operations engineering roles, contributing to machinery reliability and organisational success.

All apprenticeship standards cover three overall sections, these being Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours. Each of these areas is associated with a specific standard and covers topics that are relevant to that industry and profession. The training is a blended learning delivery model, which occurs on the job during working hours. A structured learning and assessment plan is put in place to test core components of the course along the way.

This consists of:

1-to-1 monthly meeting: Approx. two hours with a GLP Trainer (face-to-face or telephone)
Online learning courses and/or group sessions
Building an electronic portfolio of work-related evidence
Maths and English Level 2 (if not previously achieved)
6 hours a week spent working towards your apprenticeship.
End Point Assessment by an external examiner to complete the qualification, consisting of a resourcing project assignment and a professional discussion

To attain the qualification, you will undergo an assessment throughout your apprenticeship, culminating into a final evaluation known as the End Point Assessment (EPA), which can get you a result of a Pass, Distinction, or Fail.

Moreover, the apprentice must have completed the following gateway requirements prior to beginning their EPA:

End Point Assessment Gateway:

The Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician EPA is administered by City & Guilds, our designated End Point Assessment organisation (EPAO).

The EPA process commences once the employer confirms that the apprentice consistently meets or exceeds the standards outlined in the occupational standard.

The employer must confirm that they think the apprentice:

Satisfactory completion of the formal training plan agreed with the apprentice by the employer

Has sufficient evidence in the form of a portfolio to allow the apprentice to consistently demonstrate knowledge, skills and behaviours as described in the standard.

End Point Assessment:

EPA's typically takes about 6 months and apprentices are required to complete:

Knowledge Assessment: Standardised knowledge assessment consisting of 30 multiple choice questions, which may be scenario based, to be taken under examination conditions

Final Observation: Of Practical Work to check competence and efficiency

Interview: Based upon an evidence portfolio which will include all evidence of practical observation, progress reviews and work activities

The combined score of these methods will provide an overall final grade for the apprenticeship.
