Advanced Carpentry & Joinery

This profession is present in both the new construction and renovation sectors of the building industry, which plays a crucial role in developing the necessary infrastructure for society such as homes, hospitals, schools, energy, and transportation. With the increasing demand for new housing, there is a growing need for carpenters and joiners.

An Advanced Site Carpenter would undertake complex jobs such as liaising with other trades and contractors, and potentially supervising others. An Advanced Architectural Joiner would also work with architects and designers in a workshop setting, primarily using timber.

Advanced Site Carpenters are responsible for constructing domestic and commercial properties on building sites, including preparing and installing intricate and customised building components. Advanced Architectural Joiners work in a workshop where they produce intricate building components by utilising their advanced woodworking skills to set out, mark, and assemble the required components.

This course is suitable if you are currently or soon to be an employee in this occupation and will be responsible for working in a team, sometimes supervising others, using machinery and tools to create or refurbish structures or components from the designs, plans and specifications of architects and designers to meet the client’s expectations.

Entry Requirements:

Down to the discretion of individual employers but typically includes:

Level 2 English and Mathematics, or equivalent (can be completed during the apprenticeship)
Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery
16 or over
Not in Full-Time Education

All apprenticeship standards cover three overall sections, these being Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours. Each of these areas is associated with a specific standard and covers topics that are relevant to that industry and profession. The training is a blended learning delivery model, which occurs on the job during working hours. A structured learning and assessment plan is put in place to test core components of the course along the way.

This consists of:

1-to-1 monthly meeting: Approx. two hours with a GLP Trainer (face-to-face or telephone)
Online learning courses and/or group sessions
Building an electronic portfolio of work-related evidence
Maths and English Level 2 (if not previously achieved)
6 hours a week spent working towards your apprenticeship.
End Point Assessment by an external examiner to complete the qualification, consisting of a resourcing project assignment and a professional discussion

To attain the qualification, you will undergo an assessment throughout your apprenticeship, culminating into a final evaluation known as the End Point Assessment (EPA), which can get you a result of a Pass, Distinction, or Fail.

Moreover, the apprentice must have completed the following requirement prior to beginning their EPA:

Obtain a Functional Skills Qualification (if applicable).

End Point Assessment Gateway:

The Advanced Carpentry & Joinery EPA is administered by City & Guilds, our designated End Point Assessment organisation (EPAO).

The employer must be satisfied that the apprentice is consistently working at, or above, the level of the occupational standard.

Apprentices must complete the following approved qualifications mandated in the standard:

Confirm they are ready to take the EPA

Passed BWF approved SiteRight Fire Door Installation Awareness delivered by an NOCN approved provider or Level 3 Award in Fire Door Safety delivery by a City and Guilds approved provider.

For the interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence, the apprentice must submit a portfolio of evidence.

The apprentice must submit the gateway evidence to their EPAO, including any organisation specific policies and procedures.

End Point Assessment:

EPA's typically take about 3 months and apprentices are required to complete:

Multiple Choice Test: The apprentice must answer questions in a controlled and invigilated place. It gives them the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge mapped to this assessment.

Practical Assessment with Questions: An assessor observers an apprentice completing a task (or series of tasks) set by the EPAO. The assessment environment must relate to the apprentice's natural working environment. This will also allow the apprentice the opportunity to demonstrate the right KSB's.

Interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence: An assessor asks the apprentice questions, also allowing them to demonstrate the right KSB's. Apprentices can refer their answers with evidence from their portfolio of evidence.

The combined score of these methods will provide an overall final grade for the apprenticeship.
