Delivered by a City & Guilds Centre of Excellence, GLP Training’s Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship equips aspiring professionals with essential skills for one of the most in-demand trades in the UK. As the construction and housing sectors continue to expand, skilled carpenters and joiners are vital for building and maintaining essential infrastructure like homes, schools, and hospitals. This apprenticeship offers a balanced blend of practical and theoretical training, focusing on teamwork, communication, tool mastery, and specialist carpentry techniques.
Learners can choose between two career pathways — Site Carpenter or Architectural Joiner — each tailored to distinct roles within the construction and workshop environments. Whether on-site or in a workshop, apprentices graduate with industry-relevant expertise and clear progression opportunities into Level 3 qualifications or specialist roles.
This is an entry-level programme ideal for those beginning their career. It equips learners with the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours to get started in their desired industry. Before starting, you’ll complete a skill scan to assess your current knowledge and ensure this apprenticeship is the right fit for you. You must also:

- Not be in full-time education
- Live in the UK or EEA and have ordinarily been resident for the past 3 years (some exceptions may apply).
- Have the right to work in the UK
- Be in (or moving into) a suitable job role that provides opportunities to develop and demonstrate the required skills and behaviours – a role suitability overview will be completed prior to starting to ensure alignment between your job role and the apprenticeship
- Be willing to complete Functional Skills qualifications during your apprenticeship if required, depending on employer policy, the nature of the qualification, or if you don’t already hold the necessary English and Maths qualifications

This includes
- Monthly 1-to-1 meetings (approx. 2 hours) with a GLP Trainer, either face-to-face or virtually
- Online learning modules and group sessions
- Building an electronic portfolio of work-based evidence
- Maths and English Functional Skills (if necessary). Please click here to learn more.
- Around 6 hours per week dedicated to apprenticeship activities
- Final assessment by an external examiner, comprising a resourcing project assignment and a professional discussion to complete the qualification
Assessment
To achieve the qualification, apprentices are assessed throughout their training, culminating in a final assessment, which results in a Pass, Distinction, or Fail.
Before entering the Apprenticeship Assessment, apprentices must meet gateway requirements, including completing Functional Skills qualifications (if applicable). The employer must confirm the apprentice is working at or above the occupational standard and has sufficient evidence to proceed.
The Apprenticeship Assessment, delivered by City & Guilds, typically takes around three months and includes three components:
- Practical Assessment with Questions: An assessor observes the apprentice completing real-world tasks in a suitable environment.
- Interview Underpinned by Portfolio: A structured interview supported by the apprentice’s portfolio of evidence.
- Knowledge Assessment: A multiple-choice test in an invigilated setting.
The apprentice’s final grade is determined by their combined performance across all assessment elements.
