GLP Training kicks off 2026 with a Year 9 and Year 10 Taster Day in partnership with Tudor Grange Academy, Worcester.
Delivered at Building Block 1, the day provided a powerful example of how targeted, practical learning experiences can transform engagement, behaviour and aspiration for young people.
The taster day was carefully designed to support all types of learners, including those who may be more practically inclined or for those who may benefit more from additional learning support.
Our aims were simple:
Provide a positive, hands-on learning experience linked to construction and building services
Improve engagement, focus, and inclusion
Build confidence, self-worth, and aspiration
Strengthen connections between education, skills provision, and the local community
By introducing learners to practical career pathways at an early stage, we help engage them with education while developing essential life skills such as creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking, which are all important for their future success.
Throughout the day, learners took part in a structured programmes combining practical activities with short teaching sessions to reinforce understanding.
Activities included:
-
Tiling, where learners prepared surfaces, measured materials, applied adhesive, and positioned tiles with precision. Building patience, focus, and attention to detail.
-
Basic electrical installation, including fitting and wiring wall sockets, supported by introductory theory on safety, compliance, and core electrical principles. Encouraging problem-solving, active listening, and sustained concentration.
This blended approach helped learners connect practical tasks to real-world knowledge, significantly boosting engagement and confidence.
Overall, all learners showed outstanding behaviour throughout the day. Learners demonstrated focus, positive communication, a willingness to learn, and genuine pride in their work.
Staff observed a significant improvement in confidence and communication skills over the course of just one day, a powerful reminder of what’s possible when learning feels relevant and achievable.
Learner feedback captured the true impact of the experience:
“It was a great day and we did a lot! I didn’t get bored once!”
“The electrical bit was my favourite. I normally zone out at school, but I could actually focus on the practical bits. I want to do work experience with them!”
These reflections highlight increased engagement, and motivation, improved behaviour, and early aspirations toward vocational pathways.
This taster day truly highlighted the power of practical learning to re-engage learners, supporting inclusion, and improving long-term outcomes.
Encouragingly, Tudor Grange Academies Trust has already expressed strong interest in expanding the programme, including wider access to sessions and closer collaboration with schools and families.
With clear potential to scale across the region, we’re now inviting local authorities, academy trusts, and strategic partners to work with us to build on this success.
Creating meaningful pathways for young people and strengthening the local skills pipeline.
